The registration of domain names in Nigeria is handled by the office of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) the creation of which was approved by the Federal Executive Council in March 2001. NITDA is under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and its primary mandate is "to ensure the implementation of the National Information Technology (IT) Policy and coordinate and regulate the development and regulation of the Information Technology sector".
Under the IT policy, Nigeria operates a close domain system under the dot-ng registration title.
Any applicant desirous of registering a domain name in Nigeria is required to file an indemnity bond absolving the registering office from "all cost, fees, expenses that may arise from litigation involving trademark, trade name, service mark, and any other name infringements, or other reason".
